Ian Frith brings over 20 years of experience in the alpaca industry, with a long-standing commitment to its growth and commercial success.

Throughout his career, Ian has held key leadership roles, including serving on the committee of the Australian Alpaca Association NSW Region (formerly the Sydney Coast and Highlands Region), and as a member of the Association’s Executive. He has also contributed to export-focused initiatives, supporting the global expansion of Australian alpaca genetics and knowledge.

A recognised pioneer in promoting and developing the alpaca meat industry, Ian has consistently advocated for diversification and sustainability within the sector. He is a strong proponent of advancing the commercialisation of alpaca fibre, encouraging alignment with mill requirements both in Australia and internationally. His approach emphasises breeding alpacas to meet defined market standards, strengthening the industry’s long-term viability.

Ian has extensive experience exporting live alpacas overseas, working closely with international partners to ensure successful delivery and ongoing education in alpaca management and production.

He has been an active member of the Waratah Alpaca Fibre Co-operative committee since 2004, contributing his knowledge and leadership to support members and drive industry progress.

Deb Trostian has been actively involved in the alpaca industry for over 18 years, contributing across a wide range of areas with a strong focus on its long-term growth and commercial potential.

She has played a key role in industry development through convening numerous halter and fleece shows, as well as organising Australia’s only alpaca meat show to date—demonstrating her commitment to innovation and diversification within the sector.

Deb has served on various committees at both State and National levels, supporting industry promotion, education, and engagement. She has also been closely involved in delivering seminars for new breeders, helping to build knowledge and capability across the community.

A founding Board member of the Waratah Alpaca Fibre Co-operative Ltd, Deb has contributed her experience and leadership since its inception.

Together with her husband, Steve, she successfully operated a business for more than 30 years, bringing a deep understanding of the dedication, resilience, and strategic thinking required to build and sustain a successful enterprise.

Keith has been involved in the alpaca industry since 1997, making him one of the early breeders in New South Wales. He was among the first in the state to complete the Alpaca Course at Hawkesbury TAFE, building a strong foundation in best practice breeding and herd management.

Today, Keith manages a herd of approximately 160 alpacas, bringing decades of hands-on experience and practical knowledge to the industry.

Alongside his agricultural pursuits, Keith successfully owned and operated a retail tyre service business for 30 years, demonstrating his strong business acumen and commitment to long-term enterprise development.

Now semi-retired, he continues to manage his alpaca farm while also overseeing a barramundi fish farm. Keith contributes to the broader industry as a volunteer Director of the Waratah Alpaca Fibre Co-operative, supporting its growth and ongoing success.

Sue Harris is a former lawyer and an active alpaca breeder, specialising in black alpacas at her farm in the Otway Ranges, Victoria.

She has served as a Director of the Australian Alpaca Association, contributing to the advancement of the industry both nationally and internationally. In this role, Sue travelled to China in 2018 and 2019 to promote Australian alpaca fibre, supporting the development of global market opportunities.

Sue is deeply passionate about the growth and commercialisation of the Australian alpaca fleece industry, with a strong focus on quality, market alignment, and long-term sustainability.

Rob Harborne has been breeding Huacaya alpacas since 2005, managing a herd of approximately 130 animals with a particular focus on grey genetics.

An active and accomplished exhibitor, Rob has shown extensively and achieved success at multiple levels, reflecting his commitment to quality breeding and industry standards.

Rob brings over 30 years of professional experience in the agricultural sector, having worked as an agronomist across a range of organisations. He holds a Degree in Systems Agriculture and a Master of Applied Science, underpinning his practical expertise with strong academic knowledge.

He has also been actively involved in marketing alpaca fibre through farmers markets, helping to build awareness and demand at a grassroots level.

Rob is passionate about supporting and promoting the alpaca fibre industry and is committed to contributing to its continued growth and commercial development.

Mel McNair has over 25 years of experience in the manufacturing industry, bringing strong operational and commercial insight to his work.

Now retired, Mel has spent the past decade actively involved in the alpaca industry, developing hands-on experience in breeding and farm management.

As a Director, he contributes a practical, business-focused perspective, supporting the ongoing growth and sustainability of the alpaca sector.
