Waratah accepts both Huacaya and Suri fleece from growers. Fleece is sorted and classed in accordance with the Australian Alpaca Association Fleece Classing Code of Practice and may be held or marketed depending on buyer demand.

Waratah sorts and classes all fleece using recognised industry standards with AWEX-accredited classers.

Fleece Requirements

All fleece will be accepted by the Co-op subject to market availability. To obtain the best price for saddle fleece and good pieces, it is strongly recommended that these be adequately skirted to remove course fibres and vegetable matter. Growers will be charged for additional skirting that may be required and could result in potential downgrade of fleece.

Detailed and Summary Guidelines for Fleece Preparation is available for growers requiring further assistance in preparing fleece for delivery. The Guidelines have been developed to assist producers in maximising the value of their fleece.

Waratah provides a simple, structured pathway to move your alpaca fleece from farm to market.

1. Prepare Your Fleece

Skirt saddles and remove dust, vegetable matter and contamination as much as possible.

2. Separate and Pack

Separate fleece by colour and micron where possible and pack into butts or bales.

3. Book a Collection

Contact Waratah to confirm fleece calls and arrange delivery during collection dates or an approved drop-off location.

4. AWEX Classing

Your fleece is professionally classed and sorted using recognised AWEX classing standards.

5. Sold to Buyers

Fleece may fill existing buyer orders or be marketed to domestic and international buyers.

6. Payment Issued

Members receive 30% upfront payment once fleece is classed, with the balance paid when sold. Non-members are paid after their fleece has been sold.

7. Share in the Co-operative’s Success

Members may receive dividend payments from the Co-operative’s profits, distributed annually.
